Understanding Hydraulic Oil Grades
Hydraulic oil is classified by ISO viscosity grade: the number tells you how thick the oil is at 40°C. The three most common grades are:
AW-32 (Light)
Best for cold weather operations and high-speed hydraulic systems. Used in equipment that operates in air-conditioned environments or northern climates. If your customers run precision CNC machines or indoor hydraulic presses, AW-32 is usually the right call.
AW-46 (Medium)
The most versatile grade and the best seller for general-purpose hydraulic equipment. Works well in moderate climates like South Florida. If a customer is unsure which grade to use, AW-46 is the safe recommendation.
AW-68 (Heavy)
Designed for high-temperature environments and heavy-load equipment. Construction equipment, outdoor hydraulic systems, and industrial presses that generate significant heat benefit from the thicker film protection of AW-68.
The "AW" Stands for Anti-Wear
All three grades include anti-wear additives (zinc-based ZDDP) that protect hydraulic pump components from metal-to-metal contact. This is what separates hydraulic oil from generic industrial oils.
We stock Chevron and American Oil hydraulic oil in all three AW grades, plus TekStar R&O AW oils from ISO 32 up to ISO 460, in 5-gallon pails, 55-gallon drums, 275-gallon totes, and bulk. Call (305) 825-2788 for wholesale pricing.
