Conventional vs Synthetic Oil: Which Is Right for Your Customers?

The Three Types of Motor Oil

As a wholesale distributor, understanding motor oil formulations is essential for serving your customers effectively. Here is a breakdown of the three main types:

Conventional Motor Oil

Made from refined crude oil, conventional motor oil is the most affordable option. It works well for older vehicles with simple engine designs and drivers who change oil frequently. Brands like Thunder and Chevron Supreme offer reliable conventional options at competitive wholesale prices.

Synthetic Blend

A mix of conventional and synthetic base oils, synthetic blend offers better protection than conventional at a moderate price point. This is the sweet spot for most customers: fleet operators, auto shops, and quick lube centers. AllFleet and Mobil Super 5000 are popular synthetic blend choices.

Full Synthetic

Engineered for maximum performance, full synthetic oil provides superior protection in extreme temperatures, better fuel economy, and longer drain intervals. Premium lines like Mobil 1, Castrol GTX Full Synthetic, and Pennzoil Full Synthetic command higher margins.

What to Stock

For most wholesale accounts, we recommend carrying all three formulations in the most popular viscosities (5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30). This covers 90% of passenger vehicle needs. For heavy duty accounts, stock 15W-40 in both conventional and synthetic blend.
