NLGI Grease Grades: Which Grease Your Shop or Fleet Should Stock

An NLGI 2 lithium complex grease carrying the ASTM D4950 GC-LB rating is the one product that covers most of what a typical auto repair shop or fleet garage needs: chassis zerks, wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and general bearing lubrication. The catch is that the NLGI grade number tells you only how thick the grease is, not what it is built for, so the thickener type and whether the product carries an EP (extreme pressure) rating matter just as much as the grade number. Many shops stock grease the way they stock fasteners: whatever was available, and probably two products that are not compatible with each other. What the NLGI grade number means

The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) defines a consistency scale that runs from 000 (semi-fluid, almost pourable) to 6 (nearly solid block grease). The number is derived from a standard worked-penetration test (ASTM D217) that measures how far a metal cone sinks into the grease at 25 degrees C in 0.1 mm units. A softer grease gets a higher penetration number and a lower NLGI grade number.

For most shops and fleets, the grades you encounter in practice are:

  • NLGI 00 / 0 / 1: Semi-fluid to soft. Used in centralized lubrication systems that pump grease through multiple lines from a single reservoir, in gear housings that need a pumpable lubricant, and in cold-weather applications where a stiffer grease would not flow through the lines. A South Florida shop almost never stocks these specifically.
  • NLGI 2: The universal standard grade. Firm enough to stay in a bearing or at a zerk fitting, soft enough for a standard grease gun at any temperature a shop in this climate works in. Virtually all chassis, wheel bearing, and general-purpose automotive grease sold in the United States is NLGI 2.
  • NLGI 3: Stiffer than 2. Used in some industrial bearings and vertical shaft applications where the grease needs to stay in place against gravity or vibration. Not typical shop stock.
  • NLGI 4 / 5 / 6: Block greases for high-temperature industrial applications. Not typical shop or fleet inventory.

For a South Florida auto repair shop or fleet garage, NLGI 2 is the grade you stock in volume. The decisions that actually separate one NLGI 2 grease from another are the thickener type and the EP rating.

Thickener type: the piece most stocking guides skip

Grease is not just thickened oil. The thickener is a soap or complex soap that forms a matrix holding the base oil in place. The thickener type determines how the grease handles heat, water, and repeated mechanical work cycles, and different thickener types are not always compatible with each other. Mixing incompatible greases in a bearing can cause the soap matrix to break down, the grease to soften and lose its protective structure, and the bearing to run unprotected.

The thickeners your shop will encounter:

Lithium: The most common general-purpose thickener. Adequate for many moderate-duty automotive applications. The drop point (the temperature at which the grease loses its structure and bleeds oil) is roughly 350 to 380 degrees F for simple lithium. Works fine for low-to-moderate heat applications but has less headroom than lithium complex in a demanding bearing.

Lithium complex: A structurally upgraded lithium soap. The complex formation raises the drop point to roughly 500 degrees F and above and improves mechanical stability under repeated work cycles. Lithium complex is the standard for modern automotive service: wheel bearings, chassis, and general bearing lubrication where higher heat peaks or longer service intervals are expected. If you stock one multi-purpose grease, this is the thickener type to choose.

Calcium sulfonate complex: Outstanding water resistance, excellent rust and corrosion inhibition, and a high drop point comparable to lithium complex. The calcium sulfonate thickener itself provides rust protection without needing separate rust-inhibitor additives. For South Florida shops near the coast or serving marine-adjacent accounts, this is the thickener that holds up where lithium washes off.

Polyurea: Common in sealed electric-motor bearings and some factory fills. Polyurea is not generally compatible with lithium or calcium-based soap thickeners. If a motor comes in with a factory polyurea fill in a sealed bearing, replenish with polyurea, not the shop's standard lithium complex gun.

The practical rule: do not mix thickener types in the same bearing without checking compatibility first. Lithium and lithium complex are generally compatible with each other. Lithium and calcium sulfonate complex are not always compatible. When in doubt about what is already in a fitting or bearing, purge before repacking.

EP vs non-EP: when extreme pressure additives matter

EP grease adds sulfur-phosphorus additives (and in some products molybdenum disulfide, known as "moly") that form a sacrificial film under high metal-to-metal contact loads. Non-EP grease relies on the base oil film and thickener alone, which is sufficient for many bearing applications but not for components that operate under heavy load and sliding contact.

Applications where EP is typically needed:

  • Wheel bearings carrying vehicle weight under rotation (tapered roller bearings in older vehicles; for sealed hub units, check the OEM service spec for the required grease type)
  • CV axle joints and universal joints, which operate at an angle under load
  • Ball joints and tie rod ends under constant steering load
  • Fifth wheels, king pins, and heavy-duty trailer hitches
  • Agricultural and fleet equipment: planetary drives, PTO shafts, and drawbar connections

Where to check before using EP:

Bearings or bushings made of bronze, brass, or copper. Sulfur-based EP additives can chemically attack yellow metals. A standard EP automotive grease applied to a bronze bushing or a brass fitting can corrode the metal over time. Check the equipment maker's specification before applying EP grease to any yellow-metal component.

A lithium complex NLGI 2 with a GC-LB rating and EP additives is what most shops mean when they reach for "the good multi-purpose grease." It covers chassis, wheel bearings, and most automotive bearing work in one product.

The South Florida angle: heat, humidity, and coastal salt air

South Florida runs hot year-round and a significant share of the shop trade is near the coast or services marine equipment, boat trailers, or fleet vehicles operating in salt-air environments. That combination affects grease selection in two ways.

Heat: Simple lithium grease has a lower drop point than lithium complex. For wheel bearings on vehicles working in stop-and-go heat and road-heat soak conditions, a lithium complex grease holds up better through a service interval. The baseline operating temperature for a wheel bearing in a South Florida work truck is higher than in a northern shop in any season; the margin before grease degradation matters here.

Water and salt: Standard lithium NLGI 2 has moderate water resistance, and in salt spray or repeated pressure washing it can wash off or degrade faster than a calcium sulfonate complex product. For truck chassis, trailer fifth wheels, boat trailers, outboard motor tilt fittings, and any fitting exposed to rain, washdown, or salt air, a calcium sulfonate complex NLGI 2 is the more durable choice. What most shops should stock

A practical starting shelf for a South Florida auto repair shop or fleet garage:

1. A lithium complex GC-LB NLGI 2 with EP, in the volume tier matching your throughput. This is the workhorse. It covers chassis zerks, wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and most general bearing work. Buy it in pails or drums for a high-volume lube bay; cases if the shop is lower volume or uses cartridge guns.

2. A calcium sulfonate complex NLGI 2 for marine-adjacent, trailer, and coastal-exposure applications. If you service boat trailers, commercial vehicles with regular washdown exposure, or equipment in salt-air environments, this product holds up where simple lithium washes off. Keep it in a smaller quantity unless your volume justifies a drum.

3. A polyurea NLGI 2 for electric motor bearings if your shop services motors regularly. Keep it in a small quantity (a pail or cartridges) and label it clearly. Mixing polyurea with the lithium complex gun is how a sealed bearing gets contaminated grease.
