What the 10W-40 Designation Means
The two numbers in "10W-40" are independent limits set by SAE International's SAE J300 engine oil viscosity classification, the standard the industry uses to define multigrade oil (SAE International, SAE J300). The "10W" is the winter rating: it caps cold-cranking viscosity, the same cold-start limit as our 10W-30 lineup. The "40" is the high-temperature rating: a kinematic viscosity window of roughly 12.5 to under 16.3 mm²/s at 100°C, noticeably thicker at operating temperature than a 30-grade oil once the engine is warm. The winter number and the hot number are set independently, so a 10W-40 and a 10W-30 from the same product line differ only in how thick the oil runs once the engine reaches operating temperature.
