European vehicles typically need more than a matching SAE grade: most also require an ACEA performance category and, in many cases, a manufacturer-specific approval code such as a Volkswagen Group or BMW spec. That makes it a third option: useful where a ticket specifies API SN service in a 5W-40 viscosity without calling for the ACEA or OEM approval codes our European-branded lines carry.
