5W-40 Motor Oil Wholesale: Diesel and European Full Synthetic Are Not the Same Grade

By Danilo Hernandez, CFOSeptember 17, 20265 min read

We stock SAE 5W-40 motor oil across seven brands and eight product lines, and the grade splits into two different vehicle families on our shelf: diesel-branded oils built for heavy-duty and light-duty diesel engines, and European-branded oils built for gasoline passenger cars carrying Volkswagen Group and other OEM approvals. Matching the SAE number alone is not enough to stock the right 5W-40. American Oil Wholesale, a Hialeah-based full-line distributor, stocks both families on one wholesale account, alongside the motor oil, coolant, and DEF a diesel fleet yard or a dealership service lane already buys.

This guide breaks down every 5W-40 SKU we carry by application, diesel first, then European, plus the one 5W-40 that fits neither camp, with pack sizes, so independent shops across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach and Caribbean and Latin America export buyers can stock the exact line their ticket calls for.

What the SAE 5W-40 numbers mean, and why they still split two ways

The "5W" half of SAE 5W-40 is the winter rating: SAE J300, SAE International's viscosity classification standard, caps cold-crank viscosity and pumpability at low temperature (SAE International, SAE J300). The "40" half sets the kinematic viscosity range at 100°C. Both ratings describe how the oil flows at temperature, not which engine or fuel system it is formulated for.

That gap is why the SAE grade alone does not tell you which application a 5W-40 bottle is built for. SAE J300 sets a lower minimum high-temperature high-shear (HTHS) viscosity for W-prefixed 40-grade oils, 2.9 mPa·s at 150°C for 0W-40, 5W-40, and 10W-40, against 3.7 mPa·s for straight-40 and 15W/20W/25W-40 oils like our 15W-40 heavy-duty diesel lineup (SAE International, SAE J300). A formulator building a diesel-branded 5W-40 and one building a European gasoline 5W-40 both start from that same 2.9 mPa·s floor, then add completely different base stocks and additive packages for the fuel system, emissions hardware, and OEM approvals each engine family needs. The SAE grade on the label is the starting point, not the answer.

Diesel-branded 5W-40: fleet and pickup diesel engines

Five of the eight 5W-40 lines we carry are built for diesel engines, from our own house brand to four name brands. A diesel fleet yard or independent diesel shop running a mixed brand program can match the format to its volume.

Motorcraft Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil SAE 5W-40Diesel, Ford OE12/1 Qt, 3/5 QtDealership service lanes running Ford diesel trucks

American Oil is the only 5W-40 diesel line we stock in drum and tote format, so a fleet account graduating from case volume to bulk dispensing stays on our own label. Motorcraft Super Duty Diesel SAE 5W-40 is Ford's own factory-spec diesel oil, stocked for dealership service lanes running Ford diesel trucks. None of these five diesel-branded 5W-40 products carries the API CK-4 designation printed on our 15W-40 heavy-duty diesel lineup; check the specific bottle and your engine's service manual before assuming a CK-4 license carries across viscosity grades within the same brand family.

European-branded 5W-40: gasoline passenger cars

The other side of our 5W-40 shelf is built for European gasoline engines, not diesels. American Oil Full Synthetic Euro Motor Oil SAE 5W-40 and Volkswagen / Audi Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 5W-40 both target the European brand and dealership market instead of diesel fleets.

European vehicles typically need more than a matching SAE grade: most also require an ACEA performance category and, in many cases, a manufacturer-specific approval code such as a Volkswagen Group or BMW spec. A Volkswagen or Audi dealership service lane or an independent European-car shop in Miami-Dade should confirm the specific ACEA and OEM approval printed on the bottle against the vehicle's owner's manual, not just the 5W-40 viscosity.

Where Super S SN 5W-40 fits

Super S Full Synthetic Motor Oil SN SAE 5W-40 belongs to neither camp above. It carries the API SN service category, an American gasoline passenger-car rating, not a diesel designation or a European OEM approval. That makes it a third option: useful where a ticket specifies API SN service in a 5W-40 viscosity without calling for the ACEA or OEM approval codes our European-branded lines carry. Super S is also the only brand on this page that stocks 5W-40 from a 6-quart case all the way up to a 275-gallon tote, so it covers both counter volume and bulk volume in one brand.

Buying 5W-40 wholesale by format

Pack sizes on this page range from a 6-quart case to a 275-gallon tote, and the math favors stepping up once a shop's 5W-40 volume justifies it. A 55-gallon drum holds 220 quarts; against a 6-quart case like Super S or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel, that is roughly 37 cases received and stored as a single drum instead of dozens of individual cases, since 220 quarts divided by 6 comes out to about 36.7. Step up again and a 275-gallon tote holds the same volume as five 55-gallon drums, so a high-volume diesel fleet account takes one delivery instead of five drum deliveries.

Every SKU on this page ships from our Hialeah warehouse on the same invoice as the rest of your fluid order, coolant, DEF, ATF, gear oil, and brake fluid. Miami-Dade orders get next-day delivery, and Broward and Palm Beach ride the next scheduled route day. The $250 domestic minimum is easy to clear once 5W-40 rides with your regular order, and C.O.D. terms let a new account start simple. Caribbean and Latin America export buyers load diesel-branded 5W-40 for generator and fleet markets and European-branded 5W-40 for the Dutch Caribbean's European vehicle population on the same EXW Miami container.

Match the label family, then order

Diesel or European, five brands or seven, the SAE number is only the starting point. Confirm which family your ticket calls for, then request a wholesale quote to check current availability by brand, application, and pack size, and add 5W-40 to the same account as the rest of your fluid program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 5W-40 diesel oil and 5W-40 European full synthetic oil?
Diesel-branded 5W-40 lines, including our American Oil Full Synthetic Diesel, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel, Shell Rotella T6, Valvoline Premium Blue, and Motorcraft Super Duty Diesel, are formulated for diesel engines. European-branded 5W-40, including our American Oil Full Synthetic Euro and Volkswagen / Audi Full Synthetic Motor Oil, is formulated for European gasoline engines and typically needs an ACEA category and OEM approval code beyond the SAE grade. The SAE 5W-40 number alone does not tell you which family a bottle belongs to; the product name and label do.
Does the same 5W-40 work in both a diesel truck and a Volkswagen or Audi?
No. Match the labeled application, not just the SAE grade. Our diesel-branded 5W-40 lines are built for diesel engines; our Volkswagen / Audi Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 5W-40 and American Oil Full Synthetic Euro SAE 5W-40 are built for European gasoline engines and carry the OEM approvals those vehicles require. Check the vehicle owner's manual and the product label before stocking a shelf position with either.
What pack sizes does American Oil stock 5W-40 in?
We carry American Oil Full Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil SAE 5W-40 and American Oil Full Synthetic Euro Motor Oil SAE 5W-40 in 55-gallon drums and 275-gallon totes. Name-brand 5W-40 lines from Mobil 1, Shell, Valvoline, Motorcraft, Super S, and Volkswagen / Audi ship in quart and gallon cases; Super S also stocks 5W-40 up to 275-gallon tote volume.
Is Super S SN 5W-40 a diesel oil or a passenger car oil?
Super S Full Synthetic Motor Oil SN SAE 5W-40 carries the API SN service category, a gasoline passenger-car rating, not a diesel or European OEM-approval product. It is a separate option from both our diesel-branded and European-branded 5W-40 lines, useful where the specification calls for API SN service in a 5W-40 viscosity.
Can I order all of these 5W-40 brands on one wholesale account?
Yes. Every 5W-40 line in this guide ships from our Hialeah warehouse on the same wholesale account and invoice as your motor oil, coolant, DEF, ATF, gear oil, and grease. Miami-Dade orders receive next-day delivery, Broward and Palm Beach ride the next scheduled route day, and the $250 domestic minimum is easy to clear once 5W-40 rides with the rest of your fluid order.
