Tractors and farm equipment use a set of lubricants that is genuinely different from automotive or commercial truck products, and the most important difference is UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil), a single multi-function fluid that covers the transmission, hydraulic system, wet-brake clutch packs, and power take-off (PTO) from one shared reservoir. Using automotive gear oil or motor oil in a wet-brake tractor system can cause brake chatter and clutch-pack wear, and can void the OEM warranty. American Oil Wholesale and Distribution, a Hialeah-based full-line distributor, supplies universal tractor fluid, API CK-4 diesel engine oil, NLGI 2 grease, and DEF to farms, equipment dealers, and agricultural operations across South Florida, and exports EXW Miami to the Caribbean and Latin America.
If you manage equipment in the Homestead and Redland farming belt, or anywhere in South Florida's agricultural corridor, stocking the right tractor fluids on the right account matters. This guide explains what UTTO is, what engine oil Tier 4 tractors require, when DEF enters the picture, and how to size your wholesale order. For the full picture of what we do for this segment, see our agriculture industry page.
What UTTO is and why the wrong product damages a tractor
UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) is a multi-function fluid engineered specifically for the wet-brake, transmission, hydraulic, and PTO systems that share one fluid circuit in most modern tractors. Its friction-modifier chemistry is tuned to work with the bronze and steel clutch-pack surfaces inside a wet-brake system; a conventional GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil with a different extreme-pressure additive package can attack those surfaces and cause brake chatter, reduced stopping power, or clutch-pack failure over time.
Each major tractor OEM publishes its own UTTO approval designation. John Deere specifies J20C and J20D (the exact designation depends on equipment generation and is listed in the operator manual under transmission, hydraulic, and differential fluid). Kubota specifies UDT or Super UDT2. CNH Industrial, which makes Case IH and New Holland equipment, uses MS1207 and MS1206. The field rule is simple: check the operator manual, match the OEM approval designation exactly, and do not substitute a generic product that lacks the listed approval. Our lubricant cross-reference chart covers J20C tractor fluid alongside the name-brand equivalents, and our reps can cross-reference a machine against its operator manual or serial number range.
On the shelf, we stock American Oil Universal Tractor Fluid in 55-gallon drums and Allfleet Universal Tractor Fluid in 5-gallon pails, both universal tractor fluids for J20C applications.
Engine oil: API CK-4 for Tier 4 tractor diesels
Modern diesel tractors certified to EPA Tier 4 Interim or Tier 4 Final emissions standards use the same heavy-duty diesel engine oil category as commercial trucks: API CK-4, the current heavy-duty diesel standard introduced in 2016 under the API PC-11 program. The most common viscosity grade for agricultural diesel engines is SAE 15W-40 (SAE J300). API CK-4 is backward compatible with the older CJ-4 and CI-4 Plus categories, so one product covers modern and older pre-Tier 4 tractors in a mixed fleet.
FA-4, the lower-viscosity companion to CK-4 in the PC-11 update, is specified by some newer on-highway truck engines for fuel economy; most agricultural tractor OEMs do not call for FA-4, so CK-4 is the correct default for farm diesel engines unless the operator manual explicitly lists FA-4. Farms that want the house value line stock American Oil Heavy Duty Motor Oil CK-4 SAE 15W-40 in 5-gallon pails or 55-gallon drums; name-brand accounts run Shell Rotella T4 Conventional Motor Oil CK-4 SAE 15W-40 or Mobil Delvac 1300 Super Heavy Duty Motor Oil CK-4 SAE 15W-40, the latter available up to 275-gallon totes.
DEF for Tier 4 tractors with selective catalytic reduction
Tier 4 tractors and combines that use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to control nitrogen oxide emissions also require diesel exhaust fluid. DEF is a 32.5% urea-in-water solution (ISO 22241), and the concentration must stay within plus or minus 0.7% of that value for the SCR catalyst to reduce NOx efficiently. Using contaminated or out-of-spec DEF triggers a derate warning on most Tier 4 SCR-equipped machines, and running the tank completely dry triggers a full engine shutdown.
South Florida's heat makes DEF storage a real operational issue. ISO 22241 recommends storing DEF below 25°C (77°F) to maintain product quality and shelf life; prolonged exposure above 30°C (86°F) accelerates urea decomposition. An outdoor drum of DEF sitting in direct South Florida sun can exceed that threshold quickly, so keep DEF inventory in a shaded, ventilated area or an air-conditioned shop. We carry Peak Blue Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Prime Guard Diesel Exhaust Fluid, and American Oil Diesel Exhaust Fluid; DEF ships in 2.5-gallon jugs, 55-gallon drums, and 275-gallon totes, with the 2.5-gallon jug the practical size for topping off individual equipment tanks on a daily field round.
Grease for farm equipment fittings
NLGI 2 is the standard grease grade for most agricultural grease points: firm enough to stay in the fitting under vibration and heat, soft enough to push through a standard grease gun. Farm equipment carries far more grease fittings than a pickup truck: hitch pivot points, implement joints, PTO shaft couplings, universal joints, planter row-unit pivots, and wheel bearings on trailers and implements.
For operations near the coast or in South Florida's high-humidity environment, water-washout resistance matters at hitch points and implement joints that see irrigation water, rain, and daily moisture. We stock grease cartridges by the case, including Prime Guard Lithium Grease, Prime Guard Red Hi-Temp Wheel Bearing Grease, and Mobil Grease XHP 222 Lithium Complex, plus Shell Gadus S3 V220C High-Temperature Grease in 5-gallon pails for shops that fill their own guns.
Sizing the wholesale order for a farm or equipment fleet
A 55-gallon drum holds 220 quarts (55 gallons times 4 quarts per gallon), and a 275-gallon tote holds 1,100 quarts. For a small farm with a handful of tractors, one drum of universal tractor fluid and one drum of CK-4 15W-40 typically covers a season of transmission service and engine oil changes with room to spare. A larger equipment fleet benefits from moving its diesel engine oil to a tote, which eliminates repeated container changes and lowers the cost per quart at each step up in package size. The $250 minimum domestic order is easy to clear with a single pail order, and we run next-day delivery across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, with warehouse pickup available in Hialeah.
Caribbean and Latin American agricultural operations that import lubricants by container get the best per-gallon economics from drums and totes, which stack cleanly in a 20-foot or 40-foot dry container. Export orders run EXW Miami with a $1,250 minimum export order: we palletize your order, load your consolidator's truck at our Hialeah dock or deliver to their Miami warehouse, and hand over the paperwork. The full process, container math, and export FAQ live on our EXW Miami export page.
