Construction equipment does not run on the same lubricants as a passenger car shop or an on-highway truck fleet. A Tier 4 Final diesel engine, a high-volume hydraulic system, exposed pin joints and swing bearings, and a final drive gearbox each require their own specific product, and substituting shop motor oil or automotive gear oil in the wrong system is how expensive machines get expensive failures. We are American Oil Wholesale, a family-owned Hialeah lubricant distributor, and we stock each of these products in the correct grade by the pail, drum, or tote, with next-day delivery across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties and container export to the Caribbean and Latin America.
South Florida's year-round construction season means equipment runs more hours than in most US markets, so getting the lube chart right is not a once-a-season concern. This guide walks through what each system needs, why the products differ, and how to buy them on one wholesale account.
The five products every construction fleet needs
Most construction machines need five lubricant categories, and each has a specific standard:
- Engine oil: API CK-4 heavy-duty diesel engine oil for Tier 4 Final diesel engines
- Hydraulic fluid: ISO VG 46 anti-wear hydraulic oil for the machine's hydraulic system
- Grease: NLGI 2 EP (extreme-pressure) grease for pin joints, pivot pins, and swing bearings
- Final drive gear oil: API GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil, 80W-90 or 80W-140 viscosity grade (viscosity per SAE J306)
- DEF: ISO 22241-grade diesel exhaust fluid for Tier 4 Final SCR systems
None of these products are interchangeable across systems. The engine oil goes in the engine; the hydraulic fluid stays in the hydraulic circuit; the grease goes on the fittings and bearings; the gear oil goes in the final drive housing; and the DEF feeds the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions. The machines know the difference, even if the parts counter does not.
CK-4 engine oil and DEF for Tier 4 Final diesel engines
EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards, which fully applied to most off-road power bands by 2015, require construction diesel engines to meet strict limits on nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Most Tier 4 Final engines pair a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which means they need both the right engine oil and DEF to run in compliance.
API CK-4 is the correct current engine oil category for these engines. API set CK-4's minimum high-temperature high-shear (HTHS) viscosity at 3.5 cP measured at 150 degrees C under the PC-11 program, the film strength a Tier 4 engine needs under full load and high exhaust temperatures. The most common grade is CK-4 15W-40; some newer machines specify 10W-30 CK-4 for improved fuel efficiency. Always check the machine's operator manual for the OEM-required grade. In 15W-40 we stock American Oil Heavy Duty Motor Oil CK-4 SAE 15W-40, Mobil Delvac 1300 Super Heavy Duty Motor Oil CK-4 SAE 15W-40, and Shell Rotella T4 Conventional Motor Oil CK-4 SAE 15W-40, in pails and drums.
DEF for these machines is a 32.5 percent urea solution meeting ISO 22241. It is not interchangeable with any other fluid. We stock Peak Blue Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Prime Guard Diesel Exhaust Fluid, and American Oil Diesel Exhaust Fluid in 2.5-gallon jugs, 55-gallon drums, and 275-gallon totes. ISO 22241 recommends storing DEF below 25 degrees C (77 degrees F) to prevent urea degradation; on a South Florida job site that means shaded storage, not open outdoor racks baking in the sun.
ISO AW 46 hydraulic fluid: the South Florida default
The hydraulic system is where construction equipment uses the most fluid and where the wrong grade causes the most immediate damage. Most excavators, skid steers, and dozers specify an anti-wear hydraulic fluid in the ISO VG 46 viscosity grade for standard operating temperatures. ISO VG 46 means a kinematic viscosity of 46 mm2/s at 40 degrees C per ISO 3448, which keeps the fluid in the right flow range to maintain pump pressure and protect cylinders, valves, and hose connections under load.
In South Florida's hot climate, with machines running full production days through the summer, some OEMs recommend confirming against their ambient-temperature viscosity chart and may specify AW 68 for heavy-duty systems in extreme heat. The machine's operator manual will confirm which grade applies. We stock American Oil AW-46 Hydraulic Oil and American Oil AW-68 Hydraulic Oil in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums, and TekStar R&O AW Hydraulic Oil ISO 46 in 275-gallon totes.
On sizing: depending on the model's tank capacity, a 55-gallon drum can cover a full hydraulic service on a mid-size excavator, while a 275-gallon tote covers a small fleet's hydraulic program across a service cycle, arriving as one delivery instead of several separate drum shipments and usually costing less per gallon at each step up in package size.
EP grease for pin joints, pivots, and swing bearings
Construction equipment pin joints, bucket and arm pivot pins, and swing bearings take an NLGI Grade 2 extreme-pressure (EP) grease. The NLGI 2 grade falls in the 265 to 295 penetration range measured by ASTM D217, and the EP additive package is what protects metal surfaces under the high static loads and slow-speed motion that construction joints carry.
In South Florida's coastal and humid environment, a calcium sulfonate complex EP grease resists water washout better than standard lithium complex EP grease, which matters for machines working on job sites exposed to rain and tropical moisture. Our grease program covers lithium, lithium complex, and high-temperature greases from Mobil, Shell, Chevron, and Prime Guard in cartridges and pails; tell us the NLGI grade and thickener type your OEM manual calls for and we will match it from the lines we carry.
Final drive gear oil: follow the OEM spec
The final drive on an excavator, dozer, or compact track loader is a high-torque planetary gearbox that transfers engine power to the tracks or wheels. Most OEMs specify an API GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil in the 80W-90 or 80W-140 viscosity grade per SAE J306 for the final drive housing. The heavy viscosity grade matches the slow-speed, high-load conditions in a planetary gearbox, and the GL-4 versus GL-5 call depends on the specific gear design as stated in the OEM manual. Do not substitute engine oil or automotive differential oil in a final drive housing; the gear oil additive package is built for the specific pressure and sliding conditions in that system.
We stock American Oil GL-5 Gear Oil SAE 80W-90 and American Oil GL-5 Gear Oil SAE 80W-140 in pails and drums, plus American Oil Synthetic Gear Oil GL-4 SAE 75W-90 where the OEM calls for GL-4. If your fleet currently runs a name-brand gear oil or hydraulic fluid, our lubricant cross-reference chart shows the controlling spec behind each name brand so you can verify the match yourself.
Buying for South Florida's year-round construction season
South Florida runs construction year-round with no winter layup, no freeze shutdowns, and no seasonal pause on equipment hours. Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties together represent one of the most active construction markets in the southeastern United States, with ongoing infrastructure projects at PortMiami, county highway programs, and a dense pipeline of commercial and residential development that keeps excavators, graders, and compactors running continuously.
A year-round season means lubricant consumption is steady and predictable, which makes a wholesale account and a regular delivery cadence the right structure, the same logic that works for truck fleets and industrial operations. Set your order schedule for CK-4 engine oil, AW-46 hydraulic oil, EP grease, final drive gear oil, and DEF together on one invoice, and we deliver on our weekly routes from West Palm Beach down to Homestead, with warehouse pickup in Hialeah as an option.
We also export by container to the Caribbean and Latin America. The same API, ISO, and NLGI specifications apply in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and across Central and South America, so the products your South Florida job sites use can follow equipment redeployed to a project elsewhere in the region.
