What a trucking fleet's lubricant program covers
A typical Class 4 through Class 8 commercial truck needs five categories of lubricant and fluid, and a full-line wholesale account covers all of them.
API CK-4 heavy-duty diesel engine oil. This is the largest cost and the highest volume in any fleet program. API CK-4 is the current backward-compatible category for four-stroke heavy-duty diesel engines, introduced in 2016 under the API PC-11 program. It covers older and current engines in one product, which makes it the right default for a mixed-age fleet. The most common grades in South Florida fleets are 15W-40 for mixed-age equipment and 10W-30 for newer engines that accept it. API FA-4 is the other category introduced in 2016, but it is not backward compatible, and it belongs only in specific newer engines whose maker explicitly calls for it. Check the engine maker's required category before stocking FA-4 alongside CK-4. We supply both categories in the grades your fleet runs.
DEF (diesel exhaust fluid). Any diesel engine built after January 2010 with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) requires DEF that meets ISO 22241: 32.5 percent urea in deionized water. SCR-equipped trucks burn through DEF in meaningful volume relative to fuel consumption, so a fleet goes through cases of it quickly. We carry Peak BlueDEF, the brand most fleet shops ask us for, plus house brands, in 2.5-gallon jugs shipped by the case. DEF is sensitive to heat and contamination: the South Florida climate means the difference between indoor storage and outdoor storage in the sun is the difference between full shelf life and shortened shelf life. Keep DEF in a cool, shaded area in dedicated containers that have never held anything else.
Axle and differential gear oil. Drive axle differentials on most North American commercial trucks call for API GL-5 hypoid gear oil. The viscosity grade, commonly 75W-90 for most modern axles or 80W-140 for high-load applications, is set by the axle maker's specification, not by a general rule. Check the axle maker's specification for each axle unit; tandem rear axles sometimes specify different grades in the forward and rear axle. Manual heavy-truck transmissions use a separate lubricant specification set by the transmission maker, so check that recommendation before ordering. We carry GL-5 gear oil in the grades your axles require, by the case, pail, or drum.
Chassis grease (NLGI 2 GC-LB). The GC-LB designation from the National Lubricating Grease Institute covers both wheel bearing (GC) and chassis (LB) applications in one product. NLGI 2 consistency is the standard for most commercial truck greasing points: kingpins, tie rod ends, U-joints, fifth wheel plates, and trailer couplings. A lithium complex or calcium sulfonate complex grease rated NLGI 2 GC-LB handles the full greasing schedule for the unit. We supply grease by the case of cartridges, pail, or drum depending on how many trucks your crew services.
Automatic transmission fluid for Allison-equipped trucks. Class 6 through Class 8 trucks with Allison automatic transmissions require a fluid meeting the Allison TES-295 specification, the current Allison performance standard that superseded older specs. TES-295 is a specific performance requirement, not a generic ATF designation, and using a non-approved fluid can void the Allison warranty. Several name-brand ATF products we carry are Allison-approved for TES-295; confirm the product label before ordering. If your trucks run manual transmissions, the transmission maker's current lubricant recommendation applies separately.
Heavy-duty coolant. Heavy truck engines typically require a coolant meeting ASTM D6210, usually an OAT (organic acid technology) or NOAT (nitrited OAT) formulation depending on the engine maker's specification. Heavy-duty coolant is not interchangeable with passenger-car antifreeze; check the engine maker's required type. In South Florida, year-round heat makes coolant maintenance about corrosion protection and heat rejection, not freeze protection, so the OAT formulation and the correct concentration matter more than the season. Packaging by fleet size
The right container depends on how fast you turn each product, not on which container is most convenient to order.
Small fleet (roughly 5 to 15 trucks). For CK-4, a drum (55-gallon) is usually the right move for your primary engine oil grade, because 5 to 15 trucks changing oil at normal commercial drain intervals generate enough volume to keep a drum turning without letting oil sit. DEF at this scale ships in cases of 2.5-gallon jugs, which store cleanly and avoid contamination risks from specialty dispensing equipment. Gear oil, grease, and ATF typically stay at the case or pail level unless one axle type heavily dominates your fleet.
Mid-size fleet (roughly 15 to 50 trucks). At this size, a tote (IBC, typically 275 to 330 gallons) of CK-4 begins making economic sense for the primary engine oil grade, because the per-gallon cost drops at each step up the container ladder and a 15-to-50-truck operation turns the volume before the oil sits. DEF stays in cases at the lower end of this range; at the higher end, discuss the storage and contamination controls needed to justify moving to a larger container. Gear oil may move to a drum if your fleet runs one axle spec consistently.
Large fleet (50-plus trucks). Totes of CK-4 become the standard container for the primary engine oil because the per-gallon cost at tote volume, spread across one wholesale rate rather than a per-bottle retail markup, delivers the most savings at scale. A proper pump and containment setup is required, but the cost reduction across a 50-plus-truck fleet makes that investment straightforward. Gear oil, grease, and ATF should also be sized up if one spec dominates enough volume to justify it.
