How to Start a Motor Oil Resale Business: A Practical Wholesale Guide

Whether you run a shop, a store, or a distribution route, motor oil is one of the most reliable wholesale categories you can add to your operation. We supply all three buyer types from our warehouse in Hialeah, with next-day delivery across South Florida and a $250 minimum domestic order.

Three paths into the motor oil business

Motor oil resale takes three forms: installer (selling oil changes from your bay), shelf retailer (stocking bottles for customers to buy and take home), or reseller-distributor (supplying other shops and businesses at wholesale). Your entry point depends on what you already do, and it shapes everything from which format to buy first to how fast you turn inventory.

  • The installer is an auto shop, quick-lube, or fleet maintenance bay that buys oil and sells the service: the oil change. You consume the product rather than resell it by the quart. Pails, drums, and totes are your format. See our auto shops page for the full lubricant program for this segment.
  • The shelf retailer is a convenience store, auto parts shop, or gas station that stocks bottles on a shelf for customers to buy and take home. Quart cases (12/1 or 6/1 by brand) are your format; the customer buys the quart.
  • The reseller or distributor buys in cases, drums, and totes, then re-sells to shops, stores, or fleets. Your clients are businesses, not end consumers. This path scales fastest once you have a delivery route.

What to stock first and in which format

For most South Florida shops and stores, the starting shelf covers two grades: one for modern gasoline engines and one for diesel engines. These two products handle the widest vehicle mix on the road from Homestead to West Palm Beach.

API SQ is the current service category for gasoline passenger-car engines, licensed in March 2025 alongside ILSAC GF-7, and backward-compatible with API SP, SN Plus, SN, SM, SL, and SJ (API, api.org/products-and-services/engine-oil). SP was the leading category from May 2020 through early 2025 and remains widely available; stocking SQ covers SP vehicles and every earlier model year. The most common viscosity in South Florida bays is 5W-30, followed by 5W-20 and 0W-20 for newer Toyota, Honda, and other vehicles that specify the thinner grades.

API CK-4 is the current heavy-duty diesel oil standard, established in 2016 under the API PC-11 initiative (API, api.org/products-and-services/engine-oil), and backward-compatible with CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, and CH-4. CK-4 requires a minimum high-temperature high-shear (HTHS) viscosity of 3.5 cP at 150 degrees C, which means the oil holds its protective film in diesel engines even under heavy load on South Florida's summer roads. 15W-40 covers the widest range of on-highway and off-highway diesel applications and is the most common diesel viscosity we ship across the South Florida market.

We carry API SQ and SP gasoline grades in quart cases and 55-gallon drums, and CK-4 diesel grades in quart cases, 5-gallon pails, and 55-gallon drums. The American Oil house line is available in 55-gallon drums for all grades and additionally in 5-gallon pails for the CK-4 diesel grade. Match the format to your path:

  • Shelf retailer: quart cases. Each 12/1-qt case gives you 12 individual sell-through transactions from one order received.
  • Shop bay installer: start with 5-gallon pails, then switch to 55-gallon drums once you know your monthly volume. A drum holds the equivalent of 11 pails: one container to receive and store instead of eleven.
  • Reseller distributing to other businesses: drums (55 gal) and totes (275 gal). A 275-gallon tote replaces five drums: one delivery, one warehouse position, one receiving event for a large portion of your monthly supply.

How to open a wholesale account

We sell business-to-business only. Wholesale pricing is available to shops, stores, fleets, and resellers who open an account with us: there is no public price list and no online checkout.

To request pricing or place an order, call (305) 825-2788, message us on WhatsApp at (786) 651-6216, or email Info@aoilw.com. Your assigned sales rep handles your account from there. The minimum domestic order is $250. Orders run COD or prepaid; we do not extend credit terms.

We deliver next-day across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, from Homestead to West Palm Beach, covering Hialeah, Doral, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and the surrounding cities. Warehouse pickup is available at our Hialeah location, minutes from the Port of Miami.

How the economics of motor oil resale work

The economics of motor oil resale turn on one ratio: the per-gallon cost difference between the format you buy and the unit or service you sell. We do not publish wholesale prices here, but the principle is consistent across every account we serve.

  • Case to quart: buy a 12-quart case wholesale and sell 12 individual quarts at your retail price. Twelve revenue events per order received.
  • Pail to oil change: a 5-gallon pail covers several standard oil changes depending on engine size. The pail costs less per gallon than individual quarts, and your margin is the difference between your service price and what you paid per gallon.
  • Drum to pail: a 55-gallon drum holds the equivalent of 11 pails. One receiving and storage event instead of eleven, with the per-gallon cost dropping further at the drum level because you are buying a larger format on a single order.
  • Tote to drum: a 275-gallon tote replaces five drums. For a reseller with multiple accounts, one tote delivery covers more of the month than five drum orders could, and the per-gallon cost drops again.

Once your monthly volume becomes predictable, your sales rep can match format size to your turnover so you are never holding product longer than your cash flow can support.

When to add Caribbean and Latin America export

Once your domestic accounts are running and you are ordering consistently, exporting to the Caribbean or Latin America is the natural next step for a South Florida lubricant seller. The same API SQ, SP, and CK-4 specifications that South Florida shops require are called out by fleets and shops throughout the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, and across Central and South America, so the product you already stock is export-ready.

We quote export orders EXW Miami, with a $1,250 minimum export order paid before pickup. Your consolidator or freight forwarder picks up the palletized order at our Hialeah dock, or we deliver to their Miami-area warehouse. We provide the commercial invoice, packing list, and certificate of origin when required. See our export page for the full process, container capacity by format, and documentation checklist. The Dominican Republic is our most active export corridor, and our exporters page covers the full segment program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grades of motor oil should I stock first?
Start with API SQ 5W-30 for gasoline engines, the current category as of March 2025 and backward-compatible with SP and all earlier model years. Add API CK-4 15W-40 for diesel. Add 0W-20 if your customers drive newer Japanese or Korean vehicles that specify it. Those grades cover the majority of the South Florida vehicle mix.
What is the minimum order to open a wholesale account?
The minimum domestic order is $250. There is no setup fee and no annual commitment. Orders run COD or prepaid; we do not extend credit terms.
How does the margin on motor oil resale work?
The larger the format you buy, the lower the per-gallon cost and the wider the gap between your buy price and your sell price. A 55-gallon drum holds the equivalent of 11 five-gallon pails: one delivery and one storage position instead of eleven, with the per-gallon cost dropping at each format step. Your sales rep can walk through formats and volumes that match your monthly usage.
Do I need a license to sell motor oil in Florida?
You need a valid Florida business license (dos.fl.gov/sunbiz). Requirements for petroleum product storage and handling vary by scale and type of operation; the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Florida DEP are the authoritative sources for your situation.
Can I export motor oil to the Caribbean from my South Florida business?
Yes. The minimum export order is $1,250, paid before pickup EXW Miami. Your consolidator or freight forwarder picks up at our Hialeah dock. We provide the commercial invoice, packing list, and certificate of origin when required. Mixed pallets are allowed, so you do not need a full container load to start.
