Most first-time importers ask the same question early in the planning process: can I put multiple fluid types in one container? The answer is yes, and for buyers shipping from Miami to the Caribbean or Latin America, a mixed container is often the smarter first order than a single-product load.
American Oil Wholesale and Distribution (aoilw.com) ships EXW from our Hialeah warehouse at 8090 W 30th Ct, Hialeah FL 33018. Your freight forwarder takes the ocean leg from that point. Before the handoff, the goal is to fill the container efficiently, and a well-planned mixed load lets you hit the $1,250 export minimum while arriving at your destination port with stock that serves several customer types at once.
The Two Numbers That Govern Every Mixed Load
A standard 20-foot intermodal container fits 9 to 10 standard 48x40-inch pallets (iContainers.com; ConexWest.com). At sea the container carries a payload rating of 47,900 lb, but US road limits cap cargo at roughly 38,000 lb on a standard chassis (ConexWest.com; ACL Cargo). The road ceiling, not the sea rating, is the number you plan around, because the container has to roll on a truck before it ever reaches the port.
Most mixed lubricant loads land well inside that ceiling. Typical product weights:
- A 55-gallon drum of motor oil or coolant weighs approximately 400 to 450 lb net (BarrelWarmer.com). With the steel tare, count about 490 to 500 lb gross per drum.
- A standard pallet holds 36 to 48 pails of motor oil (pailhq.com), making pail pallets the lightest units in a typical mixed load.
- DEF totes run approximately 2,500 to 3,300 lb when full depending on size (275-gallon ~2,500 lb; 330-gallon ~3,300 lb), including IBC tare (ISO 22241-1 specifies DEF at specific gravity ~1.087).
A nine-pallet mixed load built around four drum pallets and five pail pallets sits comfortably under the road ceiling and fills the container floor without stacking.
Why Mix Instead of Single-Product?
Single-product containers make sense for large fleets that can move 40 drums of one grade before the next order. Caribbean and Latin American distributors often serve a different mix: auto repair shops, agricultural equipment operators, marine mechanics, and small fleet operators all at once. A mixed container lets you stock for every revenue line without betting the full order budget on one SKU.
A practical first-container mix for a multi-channel distributor:
- 3 pallets of 15W-40 diesel motor oil in drums -- volume runner for fleet and agricultural
- 2 pallets of 5W-30 or 10W-30 gasoline motor oil in cases -- retail counter and shop service
- 2 pallets of GL-5 80W-90 gear oil in pails -- transmission and differential service
- 1 pallet of antifreeze coolant in drums -- year-round need in tropical climates
- 1 pallet of DEF in cases or drums -- mandatory on 2010-and-later diesel vehicles in most markets
That is nine pallets, well inside the floor space limit. Five revenue lines from one shipment, one freight booking, one customs declaration at the destination port.
Hitting the Export Minimum with a Diversified Mix
American Oil's export minimum is $1,250. A nine-pallet mixed load clears that threshold without difficulty. The practical advantage of mixing is that no single SKU has to carry the entire order value. If GL-5 80W-140 gear oil moves slowly in your market, you do not have to over-buy it to clear the minimum; another product line fills the gap.
The $250 domestic minimum applies only to local Miami-Dade delivery orders. Export orders run under the $1,250 floor regardless of how many line items appear on the invoice.
How EXW Miami Works for a Mixed Container
EXW, short for "Ex Works" under Incoterms, means the price covers product at our warehouse. Your freight forwarder takes custody at the loading dock, arranges the ocean leg, and handles customs clearance at the destination port. All costs and risks from that point forward belong to the forwarder and, ultimately, to you.
For a mixed load, the process is the same as for a single-product order:
- Confirm your product list and quantities with American Oil Wholesale. We verify stock availability and reserve your pallets.
- Your freight forwarder coordinates container pickup or stuffing at 8090 W 30th Ct, Hialeah FL 33018.
- We load and hand off. The container departs under your forwarder's bill of lading.
Nothing changes in the EXW handoff whether you are shipping one product or six. Your forwarder treats the container as a sealed, weighed unit.
Common Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Counting pallets without calculating weight. Nine pallets of 330-gallon DEF totes would push you past the 38,000 lb road ceiling before you reach the port. Always build a line-by-line gross weight estimate before finalizing the mix.
Under-ordering to play it safe. A half-full container pays the same ocean freight rate as a full one. Fill the floor.
Skipping gear oil because it moves slowly. GL-5 gear oil sells in lower volume than motor oil but often carries a higher per-unit margin. A pallet of 80W-90 can return more margin per square foot of container floor than an extra pallet of 15W-40, even at slower turns.
